How can one man—always the sideman, never the star—shape a community and change the face of the local music scene? THIS IS TIM: A Musical Life follows one man’s journey through life, love and tragedy, as told through the eyes of his daughter and the musicians he inspired.
Tim Ellis: a consummate professional, versatile guitarist, visionary business owner, family man and bastion of the Portland music community. “Just a regular guy,” though always so much more to those who crossed his path. He made an indelible impact on his students, fans and fellow musicians alike, and approached life the same way he did his music: with a deft hand and a passion that brought everyone along for the ride.
And he left us too soon.
Tim passed away in March 2016 less than 3 months after an unexpected cancer diagnosis. During his brief illness, friends from all over the world came to sit with him one more time, to play a song, to share a laugh. This process of grieving, of loving, and of dying paints a picture of a complex and dedicated man with the astounding ability to inspire and change lives.
THIS IS TIM is a deeply personal and candid project, directed by his daughter Tiffany Ellis. The film draws from a vast collection of personal recordings, family videos and vintage television and features interviews with prominent Portland musicians, including jazz pianist Michael Allen Harrison, gospel singers The Brown Sisters, Pink Martini front man Thomas Lauderdale and Everclear singer & guitarist Art Alexakis, among others.
Ultimately, this film celebrates the man whose generosity and joie de vivre touched so many lives. It is a story of loss and grief but, moreover, it is a story of an artistic life well lived.
